Newspack, an Automattic company, is interested in hiring me. Independent Journalism is the lifeblood of a free and open society, and Newspack is filled with experienced talent who help indie news websites thrive.
Perhaps I should work for Newspack? I would gain experience working in a larger org and interface with other established pros. I would also receive a solid paycheck with benefits that allow me to spend time building a family with @Grace B..
The downside of working for any company is loss of autonomy. I have enjoyed dictating my own schedule, focusing on projects that I think make the most impact. Joe and Tracy, who are interviewing me, said that I would have to work on the defined outcomes within their “Technical Account Management” team. That may make me feel stifled, as @Matthew Cheney and other advisors have warned. I don’t trust that critique. I’m motivated to work, no matter the role, when all my talent is working toward a big outcome I believed in.
As I go through the interview process, I will continue to ask myself one question: Can I promote a free and open society best in this role? I remain optimistic that my biggest impact comes in collaboration with others, so 🤞Automattic is a perfect fit!
The Unsung Hero of Indie Journalism
The Internet interview went well, but they think I’m not a good fit for the position. I tried to talk to Kinsie about working closely on the revenue products. He never responded. I guess I’ll shelved this idea. I do hope to help news organizations get online.
