I often tell people “I am opposed to security.” Security is a complex topic, so let me break down what I mean by that statement:

My understanding of security is best explained with the objects we associate with security: walls, passwords, locks, guns, bars, .. What would a society look like if we had no sense of security? Would that mean no property, no ownership? I see property and ownership as a rather childish idea.

“This is mine!” my three year old nephew yells as he guards a Hot Wheel from a friend.

That childish idea of ownership creates mistrust and division. Wouldn’t you trade a beloved object for future generations to find greater peace?

I am opposed to security, and I also absolutely embrace Openness.

We should live in a world without passwords, jell cells, and locks. An open world is a place of forgiveness, understanding, and mutual respect.

Of course it is nice to have the temporary joy of ownership (I love to get in my car and just drive), but all ownership is temporary. We will die and lose everything. Shouldn’t we sacrifice temporary joys of ownership for a greater peace?
